THE PASSING OF A LEGENDARY ACTOR

Sad news to report this summer; the passing of veteran actor Bob Thompson. He died on June 15th in Door County at the age of 93. Bob was the father of Don Thompson, owner of the Door County Bakery. The elder Thompson had a 65 year career on the stage. He was well known by the patrons of the Peninsula Players where he performed starting in 1938. Bob was a three time winner of the Joseph Jefferson award for roles he played in Chicago productions over a thirty year period of time. A veteran of World War II, Bob and his wife Margaret retired to a home in Sister Bay in 2001 to be closer to the Peninsula Players and his son’s bakery. Over the years Bob was a frequent visitor to the bakery’s coffee bar where he would meet with his fans and talk about the many roles he played over the years.

PAINTING HONORS BOB THOMPSON

Bob Thompson stands next to a painting done by local artist Craig Blietz depicting six of the roles Bob played over the years on stages in New York, Chicago and Door County.

A FORD IN DON’S FUTURE

Henry Ford would have been proud of this restored tractor that bears his name. Don Thompson added this beauty to his collection this year and displays it on the bakery grounds for all to see. Ask Don to tell you all about it and the other restored Ford he thinks is almost as pretty as this one.

Come see our beautiful flowers!

Another attraction at the Door County Bakery is the beautiful gardens. Stop by during the Spring and Summer to see the gorgeous array of flowers in front of the bakery on highway 57 and also at the door to our new dining area

Let Them Eat Cake

“A cake for any occasion“, that’s their motto at the Door County Bakery. Call Jean Thompson and have her design that special cake for your wedding, birthday, anniversary, or graduation celebration.

Meet The Thompsons

The next time you visit the Door County Bakery, be sure to meet Don and Jean Thompson, the people who own the Door County Bakery. They take pride in what they’ve accomplished and will be happy to answer any questions you might have about their bakery, fine wines, stained glass windows, the Back Door Studio, boating, tractors, and their love of Door County.

Gone But Not Forgotten

Don and Jean Thompson say that hardly a day goes by before someone will come into the bakery and tell them about the Door County Bakery commercials they heard on WGN Radio in Chicago. The commercials they remember were done by Spike O’Dell (behind the mic) and his newsman Tom Petersen, who for years talked about the wonderful products at the Door County Bakery. Spike and Tom have since retired, but their loyal fans remember the message and continue to visit the bakery. And Spike’s Coffee Cup Museum is still at the Back Door Studio behind our bakery.
